I am a senior consultant in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and I do practise at the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Careggi, in Firenze since 2015.
I recently obtained a two-year International PhD in Oncological Surgery awarded by IFHNOS (International Federation of Oncological Surgery Societies of the Head and Neck district).
Pathologies
How the visit takes place
It takes place starting from an objective examination with the palpation of the neck, it continues with the INSPECTION of the oral cavity AND NASAL FOSSA with a FRONTAL LIGHT and with a laryngoscopy, RIGID OR FLEXIBLE. This is minimally invasive as Dr. Mannelli uses flexible tubes with a diameter of a few millimetres, so as to successfully treat paediatric patients as well. The otolaryngological examination continues with the observation of the ear canal with the otoscope.
In the case of particular symptoms reported by the patient, the doctor will be able to perform an audiometric examination, IMPEDENZIOMETRIC OR NASAL FUNCTIONAL STUDIES SUCH AS RINOMANOMETRY AND OLPHACTOMETRY.
There are several pathologies treated by an otolaryngologist such as Dr. Mannelli.
They concern dry mouth, respiratory difficulties due to chronic rhinitis, the presence of nasal polyps, dysfunctions and hypertrophy of the NASAL turbinates, obstructive snoring, but also irritation of the mucous membranes from gastroesophageal reflux, nasal epistaxis, ear infection.
Dr Mannelli also treats any problems with the vocal cords due to lowering of the voice, mucosalivary dryness of the oro-rhino-pharyngeal system due to Sjogren’s Syndrome, sinusitis, tonsillitis, cancer sores, ulcers and generic infections, such as oral candidiasis.
For some of these pathologies, treatments are different and they might require drug therapy or interventions both according to outpatient setting and / OR OPERATING ROOM.
Dr. Mannelli uses minimally invasive methods, thus promoting fast healing and pain relief. Similar results might e reached y using laser surgery and / or radiofrequency surgery.
